Green Intlpak succussed in providing the first fluorine-free oil repellent product in the world
It is one of the sustainable goals of Green Intlpak to eliminate damage or harms to the environment during manufacturing process.
Despite the fact that the use of plant fibers as materials in the packaging can help to promote sustainable environment, there exists other concerns in the manufacturing process such as chemicals added during production.
In fact, the use of fluorine-containing oil repellents (Organic fluorinated chemicals, such as perfluorinated/polyfluorinated substances, PFAS) in the manufacturing process to enhance product performance has been a long-standing practice in the industry. However, even with extremely small amounts of PFAS contained in conventional fluorinated oil repellants have become an environmental issue now.
The problem with PFAS is that the carbon-fluorine bond chemistry is so stable that makes products
1. highly persistent and difficult to degrade in the environment and
2. containing some PFAS that may accumulate in the body through the food chain.
However, since this risk is not yet fully understood, no international action has been taken to ban the use of these substances. (Refer to BPI’s exit regulations on PFAS since 2017: https://bpiworld.org/Fluorinated-Chemicals-(PFAS)
To search for a solution, we cooperated with many partners to develop alternative formulas. After numerous failures and scrapping more than 300 tons of defective products, Green Intlpak succussed in providing the first fluorine-free oil repellent product in the world in July 2020.
After another 4 months of mass production to verify the stability of our formula, Green Intlpak officially proposed this new product to the food industry.
Moreover, with a goal to build an ecosystem, we disclosed the know-how of fluorine-free oil repellent packaging to our customers and their suppliers. We are willing to do this because we understand that it is important for the food industry to provide a consistent experience to their users and it takes a collective effort to accomplish such experience. Our customers’ competitive advantage in the market is our success.
